The standard US scale
Most US schools use: A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, and F below 60, with plus and minus splitting each band into thirds (an 88% is a B+, an 81% a B-). The exact cut-offs can vary by school, but this is the common baseline the calculator uses.
Letters and GPA
Each letter maps to grade points on the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with the minus and plus grades landing at the 0.7/3.3 style steps between. Those points are what a GPA averages across courses — enter several into the GPA calculator to combine them.
Check your syllabus
Grading scales are not universal. Some schools cut A at 94 instead of 90, some do not use pluses and minuses, and a few use a 10-point straight scale. Always confirm against your syllabus — this tool gives the most widely used version.
