How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade maps to grade points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.0. Multiply each course's points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them all, and divide by the total credits:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours
So an A (4.0) in a 4-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 2-credit class give (4.0×4 + 3.0×2) ÷ 6 = 3.67.
Why credits matter
A plain average of your letter grades ignores that a 4-credit course counts more toward your standing than a 1-credit one. Credit weighting fixes that — a strong grade in a heavy course lifts your GPA more than the same grade in a light one. Leave the credits blank and this calculator weights every course equally instead.
Weighted vs unweighted, and different scales
This uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Some high schools use a weighted scale that gives honors and AP courses up to 5.0, and a few colleges use pluses and minuses differently (A+ above 4.0, or A/A- collapsed). Check your institution's exact scale — the method here is the common one, but the point values can vary.
