Business Days Calculator

The calculator walks from the day after the start date through to the end date and keeps only Monday to Friday. Weekends drop out. The order of the two dates does not matter — it sorts them for you and always returns a positive count. Starting the count on the day after the start date is the usual convention for deadlines: an order placed Monday with "2 business days" processing ships Wednesday, not Tuesday. If your contract counts the first day as day one, add one to the result. A useful sanity check: over any full seven-day stretch you lose exactly two days, so a 30-calendar-day window contains somewhere between 20 and 22 business days depending on which weekday it starts.

This tool removes weekends but not public holidays, because there is no single answer to which days those are. The eleven US federal holidays close federal offices and most banks, but private employers are under no obligation to observe them, and states add their own — so a deadline that is dead on arrival for a bank may be an ordinary working day at a warehouse. Check the range the calculator returns against a holiday list and subtract each weekday holiday it contains manually. In a stretch spanning late November or late December, that adjustment is often two or three days.

A holiday falling on a Saturday or Sunday does not simply vanish — it usually gets observed on an adjacent weekday, which removes a business day you were counting on. The federal government's own rule is that a holiday landing on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and one landing on a Sunday is observed the Monday after. Many private employers follow the same pattern, but they are not required to. When July 4 or January 1 falls on a weekend, check which weekday your counterparty is actually closed before you promise a date.

Shipping estimates, refund windows and bank transfers are quoted in business days precisely because the sender does not work weekends. The gap between that and how a customer reads it is where most disappointment comes from. An order placed Friday afternoon with a 3-to-5-business-day estimate arrives somewhere between the following Wednesday and Friday — seven to ten calendar days later. Add a Monday holiday and the far end slides into the next week. The rule of thumb is blunt: every weekend inside your window costs two calendar days, and every weekday holiday costs one more. Money behaves the same way. Bank transfers settle on days the banking system is open, so a payment sent Friday evening before a Monday holiday may not post until Tuesday.

The phrase looks precise and is not. Different systems define the working day differently: a bank counts days its clearing system runs, a court counts days the clerk's office is open, a carrier counts days it operates — and some carriers do run Saturdays. Court deadlines add a further wrinkle: procedural rules typically specify whether a period is counted in calendar days or in days excluding weekends and holidays, and what happens when the last day lands on a closed day. If a deadline carries legal consequences, count it against the rule that governs it rather than against a general calculator. When a contract says "business day", the safest move is to check whether the contract defines the term. Many do, and the definition is often narrower than Monday to Friday.
