How the conversion works
Divide the annual salary by the total hours you work in a year: hourly = annual ÷ (hours/week × weeks/year). With the defaults above — $52,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks — that is 52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25/hour. The 2,080 figure is not a fixed rule; it falls straight out of 40 hours × 52 weeks, and changing either input changes the effective hourly rate that comes out the other end.
The hours you actually work matter
Salaried roles are often described as 40 hours a week, but many expect more without additional pay. If a $52,000 salary really takes 50 hours a week, the honest hourly rate is 52,000 ÷ 2,600 = $20, not $25 — the extra ten hours quietly cut the effective rate by a fifth. Enter the hours you actually work, not the number in your offer letter, to see the real figure.
Gross pay, not take-home pay
The hourly rate this tool returns is gross pay divided by hours — before tax, not after. What actually reaches your bank account is lower, for two separate reasons: progressive federal (and often state) income tax withheld against your earnings and filing status, and FICA — Social Security and Medicare tax — a flat-rate payroll tax withheld on top of income tax, not instead of it. Neither is reflected in the hourly figure shown here.
Where this comparison breaks down
Turning a salary into an hourly number is useful for lining it up against hourly or freelance work, but the two are not directly comparable without adjustment. A freelance or contract rate has to cover its own self-employment tax, has no employer-paid health insurance or retirement match built in, and has to price in unpaid time between contracts — costs a salaried hourly-equivalent already has absorbed elsewhere. Comparing the bare numbers without accounting for that overstates how much a matching freelance rate is really worth.
Using the number responsibly
Use this figure to compare compensation on a like-for-like basis, not to settle a negotiation on its own. A salary's hourly equivalent depends entirely on the hours you enter, so two people on the same salary with different real workloads end up with two different honest rates. Whether an employee is legally entitled to a fixed hourly rate at all, instead of a fixed salary, depends on exempt-or-non-exempt classification under federal and state law, which varies by role and employer.
