How the conversion works
Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week, then by weeks per year: annual = rate × hours/week × weeks/year. With the defaults above — $25/hour, 40 hours, 52 weeks — that is 25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000. The monthly figure divides the annual total by 12; weekly is the rate times hours per week on its own. The daily figure assumes a standard five-day workweek, so if you actually work four ten-hour days or a rotating schedule, divide your weekly total by your real number of working days instead.
Gross pay, not take-home pay
Every figure on this page is gross pay — what you earn before anything is withheld, not what lands in your bank account. Two separate deductions come out of most paychecks: federal (and often state) income tax, withheld at progressive rates tied to your earnings and filing status, and FICA — Social Security and Medicare tax — a flat-rate payroll tax charged in addition to income tax, not instead of it. Converting an hourly rate to a yearly figure tells you what you are paid; it says nothing about what you will actually take home.
What the annual figure leaves out
This calculator multiplies one rate by one schedule — it does not add overtime premiums, shift differentials or bonuses. If your hours regularly run past 40 a week, multiplying a blended rate by all your hours will understate what a non-exempt employee is legally owed for those extra hours; the overtime pay calculator handles that math instead. The figure also leaves out anything that is not cash pay: employer-paid health insurance, retirement contributions and paid time off all add real value to a job without showing up in this number.
When to adjust the defaults
The 52-week default assumes you are paid for every week, including any vacation. If part of your year is unpaid — a break between contracts, a seasonal layoff, unpaid leave — lower the weeks-per-year figure to match, or the annual total will overstate your real pay. The same goes for hours: enter what you actually work, not a nominal number, especially if your schedule varies. Independent contractors should also remember this tool computes pay only — it does not account for self-employment tax or the benefits a traditional employer would otherwise provide.
Using the number responsibly
A converted salary is a reasonable way to compare a wage offer against a salaried one on a gross-pay basis — but stop there. It is not a take-home estimate, and it is not a full comparison of total compensation, since benefits, job security and paid leave differ by employer and do not appear in this figure at all. For an actual take-home estimate, run your numbers through the IRS withholding tools rather than assuming a flat percentage off the top.
