What dividend yield is
Dividend yield is the annual dividend per share divided by the share price: yield = annual dividend ÷ price × 100. A $50 stock paying $2 a year yields 4%. It is the income return from dividends alone, before any change in the share price itself.
Turning yield into income
Your income depends on how many shares you own: annual income = dividend per share × shares. 100 shares paying $2 a year is $200 annually, about $17 a month on average. Note that many stocks pay quarterly, so monthly income is an average, not a monthly check.
Do not chase yield alone
A very high yield can be a trap — often the price dropped because the company is in trouble, or the dividend was a one-off that will not repeat. Look at the payout ratio, the history of the dividend, and the health of the business. Past dividends do not guarantee future ones. This is educational, not investment advice.
