How many months should you cover?
The classic rule is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. Lean toward 3-4 months if your income is stable and you have a second earner at home; aim for 6-12 months or more if you freelance, work on commission or support a family on one income. The math is simple: target = monthly expenses × months — the hard part is being honest about what a month really costs.
Where to keep an emergency fund
Somewhere safe and liquid — a high-yield savings account or a money market account. The goal is not return, it's availability: you want the money in a day, not locked in a CD or exposed to a market dip exactly when you lose your job. Keep it separate from your checking account so it doesn't leak into everyday spending.
Build it before you invest
Set a fixed monthly transfer on payday and automate it — the calculator shows how many months the plan takes. Until the fund is in place, it comes before extra investing: it's the buffer that keeps a surprise expense from turning into high-interest credit card debt.
