How to convert

A liter is 1,000 milliliters, so to go from mL to L you divide by 1,000: 500 mL = 0.5 L. To go from L to mL, multiply by 1,000. It is a simple decimal shift because both units are metric.

Everyday sizes

A can of soda is about 355 mL, a standard water bottle 500 mL, and a large bottle 1 L (1,000 mL). A teaspoon is about 5 mL and a tablespoon about 15 mL, useful landmarks in the kitchen.
