To go from liters to US gallons, divide by 3.785: 10 L ÷ 3.785 ≈ 2.64 gal. For the reverse, multiply by 3.785. A US gallon is defined as exactly 3.785411784 liters (231 cubic inches).
US gallon vs imperial gallon
There are two gallons. The US gallon (used here) is 3.785 L; the imperial gallon used in the UK is 4.546 L — about 20% bigger. It matters for fuel economy: "40 miles per gallon" means different things in the US and UK, so always check which gallon a figure uses.
