The key conversions
One square foot is about 0.0929 m², so 1,000 sq ft is about 92.9 m². One acre is 43,560 sq ft, and one hectare is 10,000 m², or about 2.47 acres. A square mile holds exactly 640 acres — a relationship fixed by how both units were legally defined, not a coincidence.
Where each unit is used
Homes and floors are measured in square feet in the US and square meters elsewhere. Land and farms use acres (US/UK) or hectares (metric). Real estate listings, zoning documents and property tax records nearly always report lot size in acres or square feet within the US, which is why this converter exists — the raw number on a deed rarely arrives in the unit you actually want to picture.
Why the acre is such an odd number
43,560 looks arbitrary because its origin has nothing to do with area at all. An acre was historically the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day — defined as a strip one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide, dimensions convenient for plowing, not for arithmetic. Multiply those out and 43,560 sq ft falls out as a side effect of medieval farming logistics, centuries before anyone standardized area in round numbers. The hectare, by contrast, is a purely metric invention — exactly 100 m × 100 m — which is why it converts to nothing tidier than 2.471 acres.
The "roofing square" — a unit outside this converter
Roofing and siding contractors in the US often price and order material in squares, where 1 square = 100 sq ft, regardless of the roof's actual shape. A 2,400 sq ft roof footprint is "24 squares" before the slope of the roof is even factored in — a separate calculation (see the roof pitch calculator), since a sloped roof's actual surface area is always larger than its footprint. It is a trade-specific unit worth knowing even though it is not one of the standard conversions above.
Why converting length does not just carry over to area
A common mistake is assuming that if 1 meter is about 3.28 feet, then 1 square meter is about 3.28 square feet. It is not — it is about 10.76 square feet, because area scales with the square of the length factor: 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76. The same trap catches volume, where the factor would need to be cubed instead. Whenever a linear measurement — a room's width, a fence's length — gets squared into an area, the conversion factor gets squared right along with it.
