How to convert cm to inches
Divide the centimeters by 2.54: 30 cm ÷ 2.54 ≈ 11.81 in. To reverse it, multiply by 2.54. Because the inch is *defined* as exactly 2.54 cm — fixed by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, not measured in a lab — the relationship itself carries no error. Every bit of imprecision you see comes from where you choose to round. Going metric to imperial the quotient is a repeating decimal (1 cm = 0.393700787... in), so rounding is unavoidable; going the other way, inches to centimeters, the answer terminates exactly.
Mental shortcuts that hold up
For a rough figure without a calculator, divide by 2.5. You land within 2%: 100 cm ÷ 2.5 = 40 in against a true 39.37 in. Good for a sanity check in a store, not for cutting material. A sharper trick for small numbers: 1 cm is very close to 0.4 inch, and 1 mm is close to 1/25 inch. So 8 cm ≈ 3.2 in (true 3.15), and a 3 mm drill bit is a hair over 1/8 in (which is 3.175 mm). Some exact-enough landmarks are worth memorizing outright, because they come up constantly: 2.5 cm ≈ 1 in, 10 cm ≈ 4 in, 30 cm ≈ 1 ft, 90 cm ≈ 1 yd, 1 m ≈ 39.4 in (a little over a yard).
Turning a decimal into a tape-measure fraction
US rulers almost never show decimals, so a result like 11.81 in still has to be translated. The method: keep the whole inches, then multiply the decimal part by 16 and round to a whole number of sixteenths. For 11.81 in: 0.81 × 16 ≈ 13, so 30 cm is about 11 13/16 in. Reduce the fraction when the numerator is even — 8/16 becomes 1/2, 12/16 becomes 3/4, 4/16 becomes 1/4. If sixteenths are finer than the job needs, multiply by 8 instead and read eighths. For 30 cm that gives 0.81 × 8 ≈ 6.5, so 11 7/8 in is the practical call — about half a millimeter off, which is well inside the width of a pencil line.
Height in feet and inches
This is the conversion most people actually want, and it takes two steps rather than one. Divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide that by 12: the whole number is the feet and the remainder is the inches. Worked example: 170 cm ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 in. 66.93 ÷ 12 = 5 with 6.93 left over, so 5 ft 7 in. Common heights, rounded to the nearest inch: 155 cm ≈ 5'1"; 160 cm ≈ 5'3"; 165 cm ≈ 5'5"; 170 cm ≈ 5'7"; 175 cm ≈ 5'9"; 180 cm ≈ 5'11"; 185 cm ≈ 6'1"; 190 cm ≈ 6'3". Notice how coarse the imperial scale is here: one inch is 2.54 cm, so two people whose heights differ by 2 cm can be recorded at the same feet-and-inches value. Rounding a passport or license figure back into centimeters gives a range, not a number.
Paper, photos and other places the two systems collide
The clearest everyday clash is paper. The international A4 sheet is 21.0 × 29.7 cm, which is 8.27 × 11.69 in. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 in, or 21.59 × 27.94 cm. A4 is slightly narrower and noticeably taller — about 1.8 cm more — which is why a document laid out for one format prints with clipped margins or a stray blank page on the other. Photo prints line up better: the metric 10 × 15 cm print is effectively the US 4 × 6 in (10.16 × 15.24 cm), and 13 × 18 cm stands in for 5 × 7 in. Beyond that, the conversion turns up wherever a product is designed in one system and sold in the other: furniture and appliance clearances quoted in centimeters against doorways framed in inches, luggage limits, laptop and tablet screens listed diagonally in inches while their footprint is given in millimeters, and hardware where a 6 mm bolt sits between 1/4 in (6.35 mm) and does not actually fit either.
