How the fertile window is worked out
Ovulation lands about 14 days before the next period, so on a cycle length − 14 day. The fertile window spans the 5 days before ovulation plus the day after — six days in total. That is because sperm can survive up to five days waiting for the egg, which itself lives about 24 hours.
Peak days
Not all fertile days are equal. The chance of conceiving is highest in the two or three days leading up to and including ovulation. If you are trying to conceive, timing intercourse to those peak days — or every one to two days across the whole window — gives the best odds.
A probability band, not a guarantee
A "fertile window" is a probability estimate, not a promise. Even with intercourse well timed to the peak days, conception is not certain in any single cycle — natural fertility varies a great deal between individuals, and by chance alone many well-timed cycles still do not result in pregnancy. Treat the window as where the odds are best this cycle, not as a guarantee that this cycle is the one.
When the calendar is less reliable
This assumes a regular cycle. If your actual cycle varies month to month, the predicted window shifts with it and the dates become a guide rather than a forecast. Ovulation predictor kits (which detect the LH surge), tracking cervical mucus, and basal body temperature all pin the window down more precisely than the calendar alone — and a fertility specialist can add hormone testing and ultrasound follicle tracking for more precision still.
What to do with this estimate
This calculator is a planning aid, not a fertility assessment. Tracking your own cycle over a few months gives a sharper personal estimate than a single calculation can, since actual ovulation day varies even in people with fairly consistent cycles. If you have been trying to conceive for a while without success, general clinical guidance points to a fertility evaluation after about 12 months of trying for people under 35, or 6 months for people 35 and older — a provider can check directly whether ovulation is happening as this estimate assumes.
