The volume formulas

Cube: edge³. Box: length × width × height. Sphere: 4/3 × π × radius³. Cylinder: π × radius² × height. Cone: the same as the cylinder divided by 3. Pyramid: base area × height ÷ 3. A cone or pyramid is exactly one third of the cylinder or prism with the same base and height.

Volume and capacity

Volume in cubic meters becomes liters by multiplying by 1,000 (1 m³ = 1,000 L); in cubic inches, a US gallon is 231 in³. This is how you get the capacity of a tank, water butt or container from its dimensions.

Keep the units consistent

Use all measurements in the same unit before calculating. Because volume cubes the length, a unit slip is magnified: mixing cm and m throws the result off by a factor of a million. Convert everything first, then apply the formula.
