From area to tons
First the volume: cubic feet = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12, then ÷ 27 for cubic yards. Gravel is sold by weight, and a cubic yard of dry gravel weighs about 1.4 tons, so multiply the yards by 1.4. A 200 sq ft area at 3 inches is about 1.85 cubic yards, or roughly 2.6 tons.
How deep for the job
Depth depends on use: 2–3 inches for garden paths and decorative beds, 4 inches or more for a driveway (often in layers — a coarse base under a finer top). Heavier traffic needs a deeper, compacted base. Order a little extra, since gravel settles and compacts once it is spread and driven on.
Weight varies by type
The 1.4 tons-per-cubic-yard figure is an average for dry gravel. Wet gravel, crushed stone and sand weigh more; some decorative rock weighs less. When precision matters, ask your supplier for the density of the specific product — they quote it per cubic yard or per ton.
