Waist Circumference Calculator

Waist size is a quick marker of abdominal fat, which carries more health risk than fat elsewhere. Measure around your waist at the navel and compare it with the WHO thresholds for your sex.

What a tape measure around the waist is standing in for

Waist circumference is a proxy for abdominal fat — and in particular for the fat packed around the organs inside the abdominal cavity, called visceral fat, as distinct from the subcutaneous fat sitting just under the skin. That distinction is the entire reason the measurement exists. Visceral fat behaves differently from subcutaneous fat metabolically, and it is more strongly associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, unfavourable blood lipids and cardiovascular disease. A tape cannot separate the two directly. What it can do is capture the overall girth of the abdomen, which tracks visceral fat closely enough across populations to work as a screening marker — and cheaply enough to be used anywhere, which is why it survives alongside far more sophisticated imaging.

Where the thresholds come from

The cut-offs on this page come from a WHO expert consultation. For men, risk is described as increased above 94 cm (37 in) and substantially increased above 102 cm (40 in). For women, the equivalent points are 80 cm (31.5 in) and 88 cm (34.5 in). They are action levels, not diagnostic boundaries. They mark where, in the populations studied, the frequency of metabolic and cardiovascular problems begins to climb noticeably. The underlying risk is continuous: 93 cm and 95 cm are not two different states of health. The same consultation examined whether one set of cut-offs can serve every population group, and concluded that the relationship between waist size and risk is not identical everywhere. If that question applies to you, the place to settle it is the WHO documentation and a clinical assessment, not a generic table.

How you measure changes the number

Where the tape goes matters, and the widely used protocols genuinely disagree with each other. The WHO protocol measures at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone. Other established protocols measure at the top of the iliac crest, at the narrowest point of the torso, or at the level of the navel. On the same person these can differ by several centimetres — easily enough to move someone across a threshold. Whichever you use, the mechanics are constant: stand relaxed with feet together and arms at your sides, keep the tape horizontal and snug without compressing the skin, and read at the end of a normal breath out. Do not hold your breath or pull your stomach in. Because of all this, the measurement is at its most useful when you measure the same way every time. Your own trend is stronger evidence than a single reading held up against a fixed line.

What the measurement cannot tell you

The tape sees girth, not composition. It cannot separate visceral fat from subcutaneous fat, and it cannot separate either from abdominal muscle, a full stomach, bloating or a hernia. Readings move with meals, time of day, hydration, menstrual cycle and posture. It is also blind to height. A 94 cm waist means something different on someone 1.55 m tall than on someone 1.95 m tall, which is why some researchers prefer waist-to-height ratio — a comparison that fixed cut-offs cannot make. And like BMI, it diagnoses nothing. A waist above a threshold is a reason to have blood pressure, blood glucose and lipids looked at by a clinician. A waist below one is not a clean bill of health.

Who these thresholds are not for

These cut-offs were derived in adults and do not transfer outside that group. Children and teenagers are assessed against age- and sex-specific references. Pregnancy rules the measurement out entirely as a fat marker. Conditions that distend the abdomen — ascites, large hernias, some bowel conditions — make the reading meaningless for this purpose. Used alongside BMI, waist circumference adds exactly what BMI structurally cannot supply: two people at the same BMI can carry very different amounts of abdominal fat, and that difference matters. Measuring both is the point. This page compares one measurement against published thresholds and explains what those thresholds are. It does not diagnose anything, and it does not prescribe a diet, a training plan or a target size — those belong with a health professional who can see the rest of your risk profile.
