How much to tip

In the US, table service is typically tipped 15% to 20% — 18% is a common middle. Multiply the bill by the percentage: a $50 bill at 18% adds $9, for a $59 total. Split across 2 people, that is $29.50 each.

Tip on the pre-tax amount

Strictly, the tip is figured on the pre-tax bill, not the tax-inclusive total — tipping on the tax slightly overpays. In practice many people just tip on the total for simplicity. For a big bill, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the technically correct move.

When a service charge is already added

Large parties and some venues add an automatic service charge (often 18–20%) to the check. When that is already on the bill, an extra tip is optional — check the receipt before adding more so you do not tip twice.
