How to compare fairly
Divide each price by its quantity to get the price per unit: a $3 item of 1 unit is $3 each; a $5 item of 2 units is $2.50 each — cheaper, despite the higher sticker price. Use the same unit (ounces, pounds, count) for both.
Watch the package tricks
"Buy the big one, it's cheaper" is often true — but not always. Smaller or on-sale packages sometimes beat the family size on unit price. Many stores print a unit price on the shelf tag; this calculator lets you check it, or compare items the tag does not line up.
Same unit, honest comparison
The whole point is a like-for-like number. If one item is priced by weight and another by count, convert to a shared measure first, or the comparison is meaningless. Ounces vs. ounces, or servings vs. servings — never ounces vs. servings.
