How much mulch you need
Volume is area times depth: cubic feet = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12. A 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep is 200 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet, which is 50 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards — or 25 of the standard 2 cu ft bags. Divide the cubic feet by 27 for yards, or by 2 for bags.
How deep to spread it
2 to 3 inches is the usual depth for mulch — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots. Too thick (past ~4 in) can starve plants of air and water. Refreshing an existing bed needs less; only top up to the target depth rather than adding a full new layer.
Bulk vs bags
Past roughly half a cubic yard (about 13 bags), bulk mulch delivered by the cubic yard is usually cheaper and less hauling than bags. Bags win for small beds and easy transport. One cubic yard equals about 13.5 of the 2 cu ft bags — handy for comparing prices.
