How to calculate square footage

Multiply length by width in feet: a 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft. For several identical areas, multiply by how many there are. If a room is not a simple rectangle, split it into rectangles, find each area, and add them — an L-shaped room is just two rectangles.

Measuring in feet and inches

Convert inches to a decimal of a foot before multiplying: 6 inches is 0.5 ft, 3 inches is 0.25 ft. So a wall that is 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft. Getting this right matters — an inch off on every wall adds up across a whole floor.

How much extra to buy

Square footage is the starting number, not the amount to purchase. Flooring, tile and paint all need a waste allowance (typically 5–10%) for cuts, breakage and mistakes, and some patterns need more. Work out the area here, then add the overage the material calls for.
