Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator

The waist-to-hip ratio compares your waist size to your hips, showing how fat is distributed. A higher ratio (an "apple" shape) carries more health risk than a lower one (a "pear" shape).

How to calculate it

Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement — both in the same unit, so the units cancel and the ratio is a pure number. A waist of 85 and hips of 100 give 85 / 100 = 0.85. The WHO flags risk above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women.

Apple vs pear shape

Carrying weight around the middle (a high ratio, "apple" shape) is more strongly linked to heart disease and diabetes than carrying it on the hips and thighs ("pear" shape). WHR captures this distribution in a way BMI cannot, since BMI ignores where fat sits.
