How the number is found
Your current grade counts for the part of the course already done, and the final counts for the rest. Solving for the final gives:
needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
where w is the final's weight. With an 85% current grade, a 30%-weight final and a 90% target, you need (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 101.7% — just out of reach, which the status flags.
Reading the result
If the number is 0 or below, the target is already locked in no matter what you score. If it is above 100%, this one exam cannot get you there. Anything in between is the score to aim for — the calculator also shows the letter grade that score would be.
Match the weight to your syllabus
The answer hinges on the final's weight. If your syllabus splits the grade across several remaining items, group them: treat everything still outstanding as the "final" weight and your locked-in work as the current grade. For multi-category setups, the weighted-grade calculator is more precise.
