How the average works
This is a simple (unweighted) average: add the grades and divide by how many there are. For 88, 92, 79 and 85, that is 344 ÷ 4 = 86%, a B. Every grade counts equally — if some assignments should count more than others, use a weighted grade calculator instead.
When to weight instead
A simple average assumes a quiz and a final exam matter the same, which is rarely true. If your syllabus says the final is 40% and homework is 20%, the plain average will mislead you. Use the weighted grade calculator with the category weights for an accurate class grade.
From percentage to letter
The calculator maps the average onto the standard US scale (A 90+, B 80–89, and so on). Because school cut-offs vary slightly, treat the letter as a guide and confirm the exact thresholds on your syllabus.
