How the final grade works
Your final course grade is a weighted blend of the grade you already have and the final exam: final = current × (1 − weight) + exam × weight. With an 85% going in, a 90% on a final worth 20%, you get 85 × 0.8 + 90 × 0.2 = 86%. The rest of the course still carries most of the weight.
Why the final moves your grade less than you think
If the final is worth 20%, even a perfect score can only shift your grade by a fraction of the gap. That cuts both ways — a strong grade is hard to wreck with one test, and a weak grade is hard to rescue. To find the exact score you need, use the grade needed calculator.
Check how your course is weighted
This assumes your current grade and the final are the only two pieces. If your syllabus breaks the course into categories (homework, quizzes, exams) with their own weights, use the weighted grade calculator instead, and enter the final as one of those categories.
