How overtime pay is calculated

Overtime is your regular rate times a multiplier: overtime pay = rate × multiplier × overtime hours. At $20/hour with time and a half (1.5×), each overtime hour pays $30. Five overtime hours add $150 on top of your regular pay.

Time and a half vs double time

In the US, the FLSA requires at least 1.5× (time and a half) for hours over 40 in a week for non-exempt employees. Double time (2×) is not federally required but is common for holidays or by contract. Pick the multiplier that applies to you — rules vary by state, employer and role.

Who qualifies for overtime

Not everyone gets overtime. Exempt salaried employees (often managerial or professional roles above a salary threshold) generally do not, while non-exempt hourly workers do. This tool computes the pay; whether you are entitled to it depends on your classification and local law.
