VAT Calculator

VAT (value-added tax) is usually already baked into the price you see. Enter a gross price to pull the VAT back out, or switch modes to add VAT to a net price. Any rate works — the calculator does not assume a country.

Removing VAT from a gross price

This is the common case in the UK and EU, where shelf prices include VAT. You cannot just take the rate off the gross — the VAT was added to the smaller net price, not the total. Divide instead: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) At 20% VAT, a £120 gross price is 120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, with £20 of VAT. Taking 20% of £120 would wrongly give £24.

Adding VAT to a net price

Selling business-to-business, or quoting ex-VAT? Then you add it: VAT = net × rate and gross = net + VAT. A £100 net price at 20% becomes £120 gross. Switch the mode field to work this way.

VAT rates vary — enter your own

There is no built-in rate table, on purpose: VAT is national and changes. The UK standard rate is 20%, with reduced 5% and 0% bands for some goods; EU countries run standard rates roughly between 17% and 27%, each with their own reduced categories. Many countries outside the EU use an equivalent GST. Check the rate that applies to your product and enter it.
