Mean, median and mode
The mean is the everyday average: sum ÷ count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle ones if there is an even count). The mode is the value that appears most often. For 10, 20, 20, 30, 40: the mean is 24, the median is 20, and the mode is 20.
When the mean misleads
The mean gets pulled toward extreme values. One very high salary in a small company lifts the mean above what most people actually earn — the median is a fairer "typical" figure there. Whenever a few outliers dominate, report the median alongside the mean.
Range and spread
The range (max − min) is the simplest measure of how spread out the data is, but it only looks at the two extremes. For a fuller picture of spread — how far values sit from the mean on average — use the standard deviation.
