Bits, bytes and the ladder

A byte is 8 bits. Each step up multiplies by 1024: 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 TB = 1024 GB. So 1 GB is about 1,024 MB in binary terms.

Why your drive looks smaller

Drive makers advertise capacity in decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), but operating systems count in binary (1024-based). That gap is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB in your file manager. This converter uses the binary (1024) convention.
