How to calculate commission

Multiply the total sold by the commission rate: commission = sales × rate. Selling $50,000 at a 5% rate earns $2,500. If there is a base salary, add it to the commission for the total pay. Flip the numbers to check a rate: commission ÷ sales gives the effective percentage.

Commission structures

Plans vary: commission-only (common for independent reps), base plus commission (the usual retail setup), tiered (the rate rises as targets are hit), and margin-based (paid on profit, not revenue). This calculator covers the straight percentage model with an optional base — the most common by far.
