How to estimate EV range

The formula is range = usable battery × efficiency. A 60 kWh battery at 3.5 mi/kWh goes about 60 × 3.5 = 210 miles. Efficiency in miles per kWh is the electric version of MPG — the higher the number, the farther the car goes on the same energy. Cold weather and highway speeds lower it.

Usable battery and battery health

In practice, drivers avoid running the battery from 0% to 100% all the time to preserve its life — many keep it between 10% and 90%. That is what the usable battery field is for: setting it to ~90% gives a more realistic day-to-day range than the full nameplate capacity.

Cost per mile: electric vs. gas

An EV’s cost per mile is usually far lower than a gas car’s. Charging at home at $0.17/kWh, a 60 kWh charge costs about $10.20 to go 210 miles — roughly $0.05 per mile, versus $0.12 or more for gas. Public fast chargers cost more per kWh, so adjust the rate to match where you charge.
